Lately Falcons Head Coach Dan Quinn has been busy on team evaluation. After reading an article from Atlantafalcons.com I’m thinking Quinn may want to turn safety Dezmen Southward into former Seahawk CB and 2 time Super Bowl champion Brandon Browner type player. Here’s what Head Coach Dan Quinn had to say.
“I love the speed and the length, so we’re going to try that versatility. Is he a safety? Is he a corner? We went back to look at his Senior Bowl tape where he also played corner so, I love the speed, I love the length and he’s an interesting guy for us moving forward to see what unique stuff does he have and then try to put him in the best spot to work his skills.”
Thomas Dimitroff finally answered questions on whether Sean Weatherspoon will be apart of the Falcons defense.
“Sean Weatherspoon is going to be an important part of building this defense and building this team,”
“He has that side of him and that leadership that we need across the board.”
“He’s a guy that’s really, really focused on his rehab,” Dimitroff added. “We need him back in this organization to help us go to another level. He’s starting to move around.”
With Dan Quinn returning to the 4-3 scheme. Sean Weatherspoon will likely be moving back to his weakside linebacker position. The 27 year old Weatherspoon has missed the last 3 seasons with lisfranc, knee and Achilles injuries of the past three years
Weatherspoon stats 210 tackles 7.0 sacks and 12 passes defensed from 2011-12.
Falcons Owner Arthur Blank has decided that general manager Thomas Dimitroff will no longer have the final say over the 53 man roster. That power now belongs to Head coach Dan Quinn. But Dimitroff said he’s looking forward to working with Dan Quinn on the teams personnel matters and had this to say.
“It’s not about who has final 53 or who has authority over one thing or another,” Dimitroff said on Wednesday. “It’s about working together. It’s about nice equal footing and a partnership.”
Thomas Dimitroff – After being asked if the organization ever forced their system on players.
Never in this organization have we force fed any players on our staff,” Dimitroff said. “We’ll continue to be very mindful of that fact. I think we can take it to another level as far as truly understanding the nuances and intricacies of the players needed on this football team for this coaching staff.”
Thomas Dimitroff on Dan Quinn scheme.
“The idea of allowing this team and this defense specifically to play fast and eliminate some of the sort of over analyzing and let these players be who they can be is going to be very important for us,” said Dimitroff, who noted that the team has the eight pick in the upcoming draft.
Dan Quinn, Seattle’s defensive coordinator on Sunday, has agreed to become the 16th coach of the Atlanta Falcons. It’s a 5 year deal, which Quinn felt the timing was right to become Head Coach.
“I think fortunately for me I have had a lot of opportunities to watch guys, so you learn from the good experiences and you learn from some of the ones that you go, ‘well that didn’t go maybe as well as it could of,’”
Quinn told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “So, I don’t know if there is a moment that just comes down on you, but I know that is something that I wanted to do, lead a bigger group for a long time. That is really part of the reason I wanted to become a defensive coordinator in hopes that one day I will have the opportunity to become a head coach.”
Dan Quinn talking about hybrid players like Seattle Seahawks DE Michael Bennett.
According to several sources SuperBowl MVP Malcolm Smith, an athletic linebacker, who has started 5 games in 2014 with a total of 37 tackles. Will be heavily recruited to help soon to be named Falcons Head Coach Dan Quinn implement his system.
Falcons started two undrafted rookie free agents, will definitely have a open battle for the job. Malcolm Smith should definitely have a heads up on competition.
Dan Quinn: “Play fast and physical is one of the mottos that we want to play by,” Quinn said. “We don’t play a lot of schemes and calls. It’s not what we play, it’s how we play it. Fast and physical is our style.”
Dan Quinn also said that his philosophy is to put players in a position to succeed. It’s interesting that he said that, because my biggest issue with former Falcons coach Mike Smith was that he did the complete opposite. And players obviously didn’t respond well to it. Especially defensively, ranking dead last 32nd in total defense.
Ken Norton Jr and Richard Sherman had this to say about Dan Quinn.
Ken Norton Jr.
“Dan Quinn is a really special leader,” Norton said. “He knows his stuff. His record speaks for itself with how he’s been able to work with people and put people in the right spots. His defenses have been dominating. So, I think what he’s going to be to accomplish on his own is going to be really good.”
Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman
“He’s great at relating to his players,” Sherman said. “He’s great at understanding the strengths and weakness of his players. He allows everybody to play to their strengths.”
All Dan Quinn has to do is put together an average defense. Then immediately the Falcons become title contenders. No doubt in my mind. With the Matt Ryan & Julio Jones connection, WHY NOT?
