Falcons release Tackle Sam Baker

image

Atlanta Falcons take a huge salary cap hit on monday, by releasing former often injured left tackle Sam Baker. Falcons will take a 9.2 million dollar hit in 2016.

Sam Baker was trying to come back from a torn right patellar tendon (2013) and left knee surgery (2014), which caused him to miss all of the 2013 2014 seasons.

Head Coach Dan Quinn

“Jake (Matthews) will be at left (tackle), and we’ll take it from there,” Quinn said recently.

Offensive Line Coach

“Everybody is coming out to compete…we are all just trying to get better every day,” Morgan said. “Everything in this program is built on competition. We live by it every day.”

Robert Alford On A Mission

image

Atlanta Falcons cornerback Robert Alford is on a mission to show Falcons Fans and New Head Coach Dan Quinn that he will be the starter at cornerback opposite Desmond Trufant.

Alford is coming off a broken wrist and penalty riddled season where he was 2nd on the team with 9 penalties…

According to ESPN Staff Writer Vaughn McClure Alford has been working out with friend and ESPN analyst Ryan Clark on technique. Dan Quinn has let it be known that he’ll have to fight for his spot. Jalen Collins Desmond Southward will battling for the starting spot.

Mad Mikes Opinion

I love Alfords athleticism and ball skills, with the revamped defensive line his strengths will be amplified. He’ll beat out Jalen Collins Desmond Southward for the starting position. But he has to limit the penalties if he wants to keep that spot.

Examining Falcons D-Line Depth

image

As a proud member of the FalconsNation, I’m so freaking excited. Not only are the Falcons getting love from draft gurus around the league. Examining the Falcons Defensive Line, I was hella impressed with depth. Great mix of veterans and youth players that should drive opposing teams crazy (preferably the sAints).

Last year I thoroughly disgusted with rotation, scheme & results…. Pretty much every aspect of the game defensively. I came across an interesting article written by The Falcoholic. They did a great job diagnosing different ways we should expect the Falcons will be attacking.

You won’t be disappointed check it out!!!!

Falcons sign Jacob Tamme to 2 year deal

Falcons Fans,

Latest sports news surrounding the signing of Jacob Tamme. It seems as though he’s happy with the decision to compete for a job as starting tight end with struggling tight end Levine Toilolo.
Jacob Tamme is 6’4 238 lbs and has caught 52 balls for 555 yards in the last 2 seasons in Denver.

Levine Toilolo caught 31 passes for 238 yards.

Jacob Tamme was quoted saying the following.

“I really appreciated the Broncos’ interest, and I really loved my time in Denver,” Tamme said. “Loved the organization, loved my teammates, loved the city. Obviously, Peyton is one of my best friends and it’s going to be difficult not being out there with him because that’s been a great ride for me and a lot of fun. But the Falcons had what I was looking for — a fresh opportunity and a fresh challenge.”

MadMike Opinion:

With the signing of Jacob Tamme, Falcons seem unlikely to draft another tight end in the 2nd or 3rd pick. Maybe in the later rounds or rookie free agent or two, but I like the sign. Not flashy but a quality tight end that is known for having good hands. Check out his interview below.

Falcons News: Kroy Biermann resigned

Yoooo Sports Fanatics,

Something has been bothering MadMike the last couple days. Latest sports news has the Falcons resigning DE/OLB Kroy Biermann. Fans have honestly pissed me off. There’s no other way to say it.

So lets get to it the issue at hand, Kroy Biermann. Fans are once again questioning the controversial move. Some believe the Falcons should’ve gone in a different direction. Like pursuing high profile players such as former Panthers DE Greg Hardy and Redskins DE/OLB Brian Orakpo. I for one don’t agree…. I think Biermann is a solid backup player that’s capable of playing multiple positions and can apply adequate pressure (not spectacular).
I understand fans frustrations.. but after 2 horrendous seasons, spending money on high profile players is not a smart move.

Falcons are in rebuilding mode (defensively), they have the number 8 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and are in a position to acquire a game changer. Whether its Clemson Tiger Vic Beasley Florida Gators DE Dante Fowler or Missouri DE Shane Ray, Falcons have options. Kroy Biermann is not a long term option, he was signed to add depth to a 32nd rank Falcons defense. So come guys give Kroy a break. He did lead the team in sacks with 4.5 so its not a horrible decision… Just incredibly unpopular. Here check out Kroy Biermann Mic’d up … maybe this will convince you he’s not a horrible player.

Justin Forsett to the Falcons?

Forsett is coming off of a 1,200 yard 8 TDs Pro Bowl Season. Told the BaltimoreSun that he wishes to stay in Baltimore, but is keepinghis options open, because it’s just “business.”

Justin Forsett on returning to Baltimore.

“I would love to stay here. I want to be here in Baltimore. They gave me my shot, gave me my opportunity. But then again, there’s that business side we have to work out. I’m praying that everything works out.”

News is swirling that the Atlanta Falcons trying to land Forsett. If that should happen, it would ensure a three headed monster of a backfield with Forsett, Smith, and Devonta Freeman.

MadMikes Opinion: With the release of running back Steven Jackson and Tackle Sam Baker injury status still up in the air, Falcons could look to sign a veteran running back. It’s unlikely Justin Forsett would signed to a contract, but clearly not of the question.

Falcons sign LB Brooks Reed

Falcons have reportedly signed former Texans LB Brooks Reed and here’s a little scouting report on the new Falcons linebacker.

He likes their defense,” said Zuckerman on Monday. “He can play all of their linebacker positions and they like his pass-rushing ability.”

Brooks Reed on being moved to Inside linebacker.

“It’s totally different,” Reed said in an interview with Texans Radio on June 9. ”Right now, I’m playing middle full-time. I also have to prepare to play outside too. I’m doing that as well. I have got to know a lot of stuff. I have to know a lot of adjustments and checks but it’s coming along. It just takes repetitions to see it. You can get it down paper-perfect but when you get down on the field, people are moving quickly and it’s a lot different. In that regard, it’s still a work in progress. There’s always things I can fix and improve upon but that’s just me being critical of myself.”

MadMike Opinion: Solid player that was run out of Houston because of the drafting of Jadeveon Clowney. Solid effort guy who just does his job.

Weatherspoon will be apart of the defense

Thomas Dimitroff finally answered questions on whether Sean Weatherspoon will be apart of the Falcons defense.

“Sean Weatherspoon is going to be an important part of building this defense and building this team,”

“He has that side of him and that leadership that we need across the board.”

“He’s a guy that’s really, really focused on his rehab,” Dimitroff added. “We need him back in this organization to help us go to another level. He’s starting to move around.”

With Dan Quinn returning to the 4-3 scheme. Sean Weatherspoon will likely be moving back to his weakside linebacker position. The 27 year old Weatherspoon has missed the last 3 seasons with lisfranc, knee and Achilles injuries of the past three years

Weatherspoon stats 210 tackles 7.0 sacks and 12 passes defensed from 2011-12.
